Minister Dr. Arakwiye Bernadette Visits Green Gicumbi Project in Northern Rwanda.
Minister of Environment Dr. Arakwiye Bernadette visited Green Gicumbi Project to assess the progress and impact of climate-resilient interventions being implemented across Gicumbi District. The engagement provided an opportunity for national and local leaders to witness firsthand how integrated, community-led climate solutions are restoring degraded landscapes, protecting lives, and improving livelihoods in Northern Rwanda.
During the field visit, the Minister toured several Green Gicumbi intervention sites, including radical terraces, rehabilitated degraded forests, a 50-hectare upland tea plantation, and a green model village hosting 60 vulnerable families relocated from high-risk zones.
These interventions highlight the project’s holistic approach to climate resilience combining sustainable land management, ecosystem restoration, and climate-smart livelihoods to reduce disaster risks such as landslides and floods while promoting economic stability.
Minister engaged directly with project beneficiaries, who shared testimonies on how the Green Gicumbi Project has transformed their daily lives. Community members cited improvements in food security, household incomes, safety from climate-related hazards, and overall environmental conditions.
“Before relocation, our families lived in constant fear of landslides. Today, we have safe homes, productive land, and new opportunities to earn a living.” One beneficiary from the green model village explained.
Commending the progress achieved in Gicumbi District, Minister Dr. Arakwiye Bernadette admired the strong collaboration between local authorities, communities, and development partners. She encouraged communities to safeguard the gains made and continue leveraging the opportunities created by the project.
“Sustaining these achievements is essential. When communities protect restored landscapes and invest in green livelihoods, they secure long-term resilience and prosperity for future generations,” the Minister emphasized.
The Minister further highlighted the alignment of the Green Gicumbi Project with Rwanda’s national priorities on climate resilience, green growth, and sustainable development, noting its potential as a model for replication in other vulnerable regions.
