The National Project for the Forest Investment Program for development of Agroforestry for Sustainable Agriculture in Rwanda.

The Government of Rwanda approached the Bank for Forest Investment Plan (FIP) development support after finalizing its REDD+ Preparation Proposal (R-PP) in 2014. The Bank, along with other partners supported the GoR to start the development of its FIP in 2015, during which GoR organized several public consultation meetings to seek inputs from a broad range of stakeholders and interest groups nationally, and to build awareness and support for the Program.

The FIP was approved by the FIP Sub-Committee in December 2017. It is of public interest based on the national context, with clear justification for its implementation, analysis of national legal, policy and institutional frameworks and summarizes the range of expected benefits to rural livelihoods, national development programs and contribution to GHG emission reductions.

Thus, the Government of Rwanda received the loan and grant from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to finance the Forest Investment Program for the development of Agroforestry for Sustainable Agriculture in Rwanda (FIP-PRODAR Project); executed by the Ministry of Environment (Executing Agency) and implemented by the Rwanda Forestry Authority (Implementing Agency) in 8 districts of the country: Kamonyi, Muhanga, Ruhango, Nyanza, Huye, Gisagara, Nyaruguru and Gakenke, for 5 years project duration.

The project development objective is to enhance climate resilient development and livelihoods in Rwanda through the restoration and stabilization of landscapes with Agroforestry systems to support sustainable agriculture and green growth.

The project strategic objectives are to enhance landscape restoration and stabilization; improve rural community livelihoods through sustainable Agroforestry value chain development and strengthen institutional and community adaptive skills and capacities for Agroforestry development.

Chaired by the Permanent Secretary Mrs.  CYIZA Beatrice, the first steering Committee meeting for FIP/PRODAR reviewed the progress of project implementation, approved planned activities and related budget and discussed key challenges and provision of strategic policy direction and oversight guidance.
